The award, valued at \u20ac6,000, was created in 2019 by <b>DSCH \u2013 Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Musical<\/b>, with the support of the Directorate-General for the Arts, with the purpose of honoring a Portuguese composer for the excellence of their work and career, promoting and valuing contemporary Portuguese art music.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A singular figure in the Portuguese musical scene, <b>Carlos Azevedo<\/b> has built a <b>unique career that masterfully spans both classical and jazz music<\/b>. A composer, arranger, pianist, and pedagogue, he stands out for his creative versatility and the solidity of a deeply personal musical language, recognized both in contemporary repertoire and in the jazz world.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trained at the Porto Conservatory of Music, he completed the Higher Piano Course and, subsequently, the Higher Composition Course at the <b>Escola Superior de M\u00fasica do Porto<\/b> (1991). He pursued further studies in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a <b>Master\u2019s degree<\/b> and later a <b>Doctorate in Composition<\/b> from the <b>University of Sheffield<\/b>, under the guidance of George Nicholson.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p><b>Professor at the Escola Superior de M\u00fasica e Artes do Espet\u00e1culo<\/b> since 1999, Azevedo has played a <b>central role in the training of new generations of composers<\/b>, contributing decisively to the dynamism of higher music education in Portugal.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the same time, he built a remarkable career with the <b>Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos<\/b>, where he worked for <b>25 years as a pianist, composer, and arranger<\/b>, collaborating with internationally renowned artists.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Among his works, notable pieces include <b><i>Crossfade<\/i><\/b> (for symphony orchestra, jazz orchestra, and soloist), <b><i>Largo<\/i><\/b> (symphony orchestra), <b><i>Mumadona<\/i><\/b> (three-act opera), <b><i>Labirintho<\/i><\/b> (solo cello), <b><i>Tempo de Outono<\/i><\/b> (clarinet and piano), <b><i>Brexit<\/i><\/b> (string quartet), <b><i>O Bispo<\/i><\/b> (wind ensemble), and <b><i>Short Term Memory<\/i><\/b> (solo cello and ensemble). Several of these works were commissioned by prominent institutions and festivals and dedicated to leading performers in today\u2019s musical scene.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His <b>jazz discography equally reflects the aesthetic breadth of his work<\/b>, with recordings such as <i>Lenda<\/i> (2000), <i>Portology<\/i> (2007), <i>Our Secret World<\/i> (2010), <i>Bela Sen\u00e3o Sem<\/i> (2012), as well as quartet and ensemble projects including <i>Origens<\/i>, <i>Lento<\/i>, <i>After Midnight<\/i>, <i>Serpente<\/i>, and <i>Pilgrimage<\/i>.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With a writing style that combines technical rigor, sonic imagination, and profound expressiveness, <b>Carlos Azevedo stands out as one of the most original and influential voices in contemporary Portuguese music<\/b>, in a continual dialogue between tradition, innovation, and improvisation.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <b>DSCH Composition Prize<\/b> is awarded by the prestigious <b>DSCH \u2013 Shostakovich Ensemble<\/b>, under the artistic direction of Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro.
