Series<\/strong> is a partnership between the <strong data-start=\"125\" data-end=\"153\">Teatro Nacional S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"158\" data-end=\"187\">DSCH \u2013 Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Musical<\/strong>, curated by <strong data-start=\"200\" data-end=\"224\">Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p data-start=\"42\" data-end=\"278\">It is a concert series introduced by lectures, called \u201cpreludes,\u201d drawn from other fields of thought. <strong data-start=\"144\" data-end=\"161\">Musical-Mente<\/strong> takes place as part of the <strong data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"217\">Teatro Nacional S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o<\/strong> season in Porto, with concerts held at the <strong data-start=\"261\" data-end=\"297\">Mosteiro de S\u00e3o Bento da Vit\u00f3ria<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"306\" data-end=\"334\">Teatro Nacional S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p data-start=\"42\" data-end=\"278\">The <strong data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"73\">1st Musical-Mente Cycle<\/strong> explored the intersection between music and neuroscience, featuring chamber music concerts accompanied by scientific \u201cpreludes\u201d on the relationship between music and the brain. Between November 2021 and June 2022, four outstanding string quartets\u2014<strong data-start=\"321\" data-end=\"366\">Michelangelo, Herm\u00e8s, Cosmos, and Gropius<\/strong>\u2014made their Portuguese debuts, performing landmark works by major composers. The preludes were presented by four internationally renowned guests and researchers\u2014<strong data-start=\"527\" data-end=\"591\">Barbara Tillmann, Nuno Sousa, Maria Majno, and Stefan K\u00f6lsch<\/strong>\u2014who addressed themes related to the intimate (physiological and therapeutic) relationship between music (sound and noise) and the brain.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p data-start=\"42\" data-end=\"278\">The exploration of music and science was expanded in the <strong data-start=\"99\" data-end=\"126\">2nd Musical-Mente Cycle<\/strong>, extending to <strong data-start=\"141\" data-end=\"152\">Physics<\/strong> with a lecture by V\u00edtor Cardoso, <strong data-start=\"186\" data-end=\"199\">Chemistry<\/strong> with Jo\u00e3o Paulo Andr\u00e9, <strong data-start=\"223\" data-end=\"238\">Mathematics<\/strong> with Jorge Buescu, and returning to <strong data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"291\">Neuroscience<\/strong> with a lecture by the American composer <strong data-start=\"332\" data-end=\"349\">Bruce Adolphe<\/strong>, which included the world premiere of his sextet <strong data-start=\"399\" data-end=\"427\" data-is-last-node=\"\">\u201cDreaming and Thinking.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p data-start=\"42\" data-end=\"278\">The concerts of the <strong data-start=\"62\" data-end=\"89\">3rd Musical-Mente Cycle<\/strong>, in 2023\/2024, presented a monographic triptych inspired by the concept(s) of freedom, in anticipation of the 50th anniversary of April 25th. The concerts were preceded by political lectures\/preludes, inviting reflection on the connections between art and politics. From November 2023 to March 2024, the cycle highlighted the creative genius of three composers in the context of the political regimes of their time: the absolute freedom of <strong data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"554\">Ludwig van Beethoven<\/strong> inspired by the Enlightenment, the repressed freedom of <strong data-start=\"611\" data-end=\"634\">Dmitri Shostakovich<\/strong> under Soviet rule, and the exiled freedom of <strong data-start=\"680\" data-end=\"707\">Erich Wolfgang Korngold<\/strong> fleeing Nazism. Each concert was preceded by a poetic prelude, highlighting the centrality of the word and literary imagination in the genesis of these works. The cycle opened with Vivaldi\u2019s <em data-start=\"440\" data-end=\"458\">The Four Seasons<\/em>, one of the earliest and most emblematic examples of programmatic music, whose score includes four sonnets that evoke, through sound and words, the passage of time. Violinist <strong data-start=\"634\" data-end=\"650\">Jack Liebeck<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"659\" data-end=\"680\">Juventus Ensemble<\/strong> guided the audience through the sensory atmospheres of each season, emphasizing the structural and expressive closeness between verse and music.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cycle continued with an exploration of the poetic affinities of Piazzolla\u2019s Nuevo Tango, deeply shaped by his dialogue with poets such as Jorge Luis Borges and Horacio Ferrer. In March, Uruguayan singer Ana Karina Rossi, a muse of Ferrer, performed with a quintet led by bandoneonist H\u00e9ctor del Curto, a collaborator of Piazzolla himself and of historic figures such as Osvaldo Pugliese.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><p data-start=\"42\" data-end=\"278\">In May 2025, <strong data-start=\"55\" data-end=\"79\">Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro<\/strong> concluded the cycle with a recital dedicated to <strong data-start=\"128\" data-end=\"143\">Franz Liszt<\/strong>, exploring some of his most remarkable piano works inspired by literature, from Dante Alighieri to Victor Hugo, Alphonse de Lamartine, and Francesco Petrarca.
