Welcome to the 2023 edition of the Capuchos Music Festival!<\/p>

In spring, cherry blossoms, in summer, the cuckoo.
<\/em>In autumn, the moon, and in winter, the snow, bright and cold.<\/em><\/p>

Eihei Dogen (1200-1253)<\/p>

The Capuchos Music Festival 2023 is inspired by the seasons of the year<\/strong>, creating an arc across four centuries that opens with the timeless \u201cLe Quattro Stagioni<\/em>\u201d, composed by Vivaldi 300 years ago, and concludes with the Portuguese premiere of \u201cThe American Four Seasons<\/em>\u201d, written by Philip Glass in 2009, alongside the seasonal cycles by Tchaikovsky, in the 19th century, and Piazzolla, in the 20th century.<\/p>

The succession of the seasons is one of the evidences of our perception of the passage of time<\/strong>, and FMC\u201923<\/strong> will present concerts dedicated to various temporal dimensions<\/strong>: with choral works from the time<\/em><\/strong> of the founding of the Convent of Capuchos, the Renaissance; the time<\/em><\/strong> of creation in Darius Milhaud\u2019s \u201cLa Cr\u00e9ation du Monde<\/em>\u201d and the redemptive apocalypse of Olivier Messiaen\u2019s \u201cQuatuor pour la Fin du Temps<\/em>\u201d; repertoire inspired by the summer time<\/em><\/strong>, such as Hector Berlioz\u2019s \u201cLes Nuits d\u2019Et\u00e9<\/em>\u201d, Samuel Barber\u2019s \u201cSummer Music<\/em>\u201d, George Gershwin\u2019s \u201cSummertime<\/em>\u201d\u2026<\/p>

FMC\u201923<\/strong> takes place, as usual, at the site that gives it its name, the beautiful Convento dos Capuchos<\/strong>, and, for the first time, features three concerts at the Teatro Municipal Joaquim Benite<\/strong>.<\/p>

Renowned artists and ensembles will be present, including internationally acclaimed groups such as the Venice Baroque Orchestra \u201cI Solisti Veneti\u201d<\/strong>, the Budapest Chamber Orchestra \u201cFranz Liszt\u201d<\/strong>, and the Herm\u00e8s Quartet<\/strong>, as well as prominent national ensembles, such as the choir Officium Ensemble<\/strong>, the DSCH Schostakovich Ensemble<\/strong>, and the new musical projects 100 Caminhos<\/strong> and Juventus Ensemble<\/strong>, which will bring together young and established Portuguese musicians.<\/p>

Among the leading international soloists who will be present, stand out the violinists Mario Hossen<\/strong>, Jack Liebeck<\/strong>, and Esther Hoppe<\/strong>, the singers Lena Belkina<\/strong>, Ana Karina Rossi<\/strong>, and Deniz Uzun<\/strong>, the latter in her Portuguese debut, the cellist Christian Polt\u00e9ra<\/strong>, the clarinetist Pascal Moragu\u00e8s<\/strong>, the pianist Marianna Shirinyan<\/strong>, the bandoneonist Marcelo Nisinman<\/strong>, and last but not least<\/em> the legendary American pianist Stephen Kovacevich<\/strong>.<\/p>

Throughout the festival, works by various Portuguese composers from different periods<\/em> will be performed, from the Renaissance to contemporary music, featuring world premieres and highlighting the concert \u201cCarta Branca a Ant\u00f3nio Victorino d\u2019Almeida<\/strong>\u201d, celebrating his 70 years of artistic activity.<\/p>

In 2023, the cycle of the now emblematic \u201cConversas dos Capuchos<\/strong>\u201d, curated and moderated by Carlos Vaz Marques<\/strong>, will be dedicated to the centenaries of the births of M\u00e1rio Cesariny de Vasconcelos<\/strong>, Nat\u00e1lia Correia<\/strong>, and Eug\u00e9nio de Andrade<\/strong>.<\/p>

And, for the first time, the Festival will present Masterclasses dos Capuchos<\/strong>, led by internationally renowned teachers, pre-concert talks called Prel\u00fadios dos Capuchos<\/strong>, moderated by Jo\u00e3o Almeida<\/strong>, and a Caminhada dos Capuchos<\/strong> hike in the Protected Landscape of the Costa da Caparica Fossil Cliff, where the Convent is located.<\/p>

The poem that serves as the epigraph for this text was written in the 13th century by the Zen Buddhist master Eihei Dogen<\/strong>. In its seemingly simple yet expressive way of describing the beauty of the seasons, Dogen connects us to the essence of elements that follow the rhythm of the year. Dogen gave his poem the title Innate Spirit<\/em>, a spirit of contemplation, discovery, and sharing that inspires this 2023 edition of the Festival dos Capuchos<\/strong>. <\/em><\/p>
