After the success of the first edition, chamber music returns to the Monastery of São Bento da Vitória for a second volume of the MUSIC4L-MENTE cycle, a partnership between the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, the Teatro Nacional São João, and the DSCH – Schostakovich Ensemble.

The concerts take place between December 2022 and June 2023, featuring performances of landmark works by major composers from the 18th to the 21st centuries, each preceded by scientific preludes exploring the intersection of music and science

For the inaugural concert of the series, a unique Christmas opening, pianist and artistic director Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro (who continues to curate MUSIC4L-MENTE) is joined by two top international musicians—the German violinist Viviane Hagner and Swiss cellist Christian Poltéra—to guide us through two iconic piano trios by Dvořák and Beethoven.

The second concert of the series is scheduled for February, featuring music by Schubert and the world premiere of “Dreaming and Thinking”, a work by American composer Bruce Adolphe, inspired by the writings of Albert Einstein and António Damásio. A natural communicator (he delivers one of the scientific preludes), pianist, and professor, Adolphe’s music “engages both ear and mind.”

From Schubert’s famous quintet, The Trout, to fantasies by Spanish composer Joaquín Turina and Schumann’s Fairy Tales, and through the elegies of Shostakovich, Poulenc, and Britten, MUSIC4L-MENTE creates a temporal arc spanning the 18th to 21st centuries and multiple periods of classical music. The mastery of internationally renowned musicians is combined with the enthusiasm of the Juventus Ensemble in performing the programme curated by Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro.

The scientific preludes focus on intersections between music and science—including chemistry, astrophysics, mathematics, and neuroscience—and are presented by prominent figures from the scientific community.
