The third edition of MUSICAL-MENTE brings to the Monastery of São Bento da Vitória a monographic triptych inspired by the idea(s) of freedom, in the run-up to the 50th anniversary of April 25th. The concerts are preceded by political preludes, proposing a reflection on the links between art and politics. From November 2023 to March 2024, the creative genius of three composers is evoked in the context of the political regimes of their time: the absolute freedom of Ludwig van Beethoven inspired by the Enlightenment, the repressed freedom of Dmitri Shostakovich under the Soviet yoke, and the exiled freedom of Erich Wolfgang Korngold as a flight from Nazism. In this first concert, the pianist and curator of the cycle Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro joins Spanish violinist Stephan Picard and Dutch cellist Quirine Viersen to perform two Piano Trios by Beethoven, reference works of his chamber music legacy. With the principle of freedom at its core, his music remains tied to a profound humanism. This is how we begin in an enlightened way the third cycle of MUSICAL-MENTE.
