Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro
Artistic director of DSCH – Associação Musical, Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro is widely recognized as one of the most prominent Portuguese artists of recent decades, having achieved remarkable international acclaim as a solo pianist, chamber musician, and artistic director.
Born in Porto, he earned both his degree and doctorate from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, where he studied for five years under the guidance of the esteemed pedagogue Lyudmila Roschina. Since then, he has pursued an active career, performing at some of the most prestigious concert seasons and festivals across Europe, America, Asia, and Oceania.
Nicknamed the “poet of the piano,” he is distinguished by his mastery in navigating an exceptionally wide repertoire, adapting with chameleon-like versatility to styles ranging from Baroque and Romanticism to contemporary music. He is the dedicatee of works by various Portuguese and international composers. His solo discography, comprising five CDs, reflects his artistic versatility and includes works from Bach to Ravel, Beethoven to Mussorgsky, and Debussy to Prokofiev.
As a soloist, he has performed with the leading Portuguese orchestras, as well as with prominent ensembles across Europe and the Americas. Passionate about chamber music, he has collaborated with many of today’s most distinguished performers.
A decisive milestone in his artistic career was the founding of the DSCH – Shostakovich Ensemble in 2006, of which he is the artistic director. The ensemble’s discography includes the world premiere recording of the complete chamber music with piano by Shostakovich, as well as Beethoven’s Trios Op. 11 and 38—albums that have received widespread critical acclaim. It was also through DSCH that he created Verão Clássico in Lisbon in 2015, now regarded as one of the most significant festivals and academies worldwide.
His creativity as an artistic director and curator has led him to spearhead numerous projects over the past two decades. He is currently the artistic director of the Festival dos Capuchos and the curator of the Musical-Mente Concert Series at the Teatro Nacional São João in Porto.
A strong advocate and promoter of new generations of musicians, he taught piano for a decade at Portuguese universities, regularly leads masterclasses, and in 2022 founded the Juventus Ensemble, which brings together established musicians and emerging young talent.
In 2014, he was honored with the official title of “Steinway Artist” by the prestigious piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons, becoming the only Portuguese pianist to hold this distinction.
