DSCH Schostakovich Ensemble

Founded in 2006 by pianist Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro, the DSCH – Shostakovich Ensemble is recognized as one of the leading musical groups on today’s international scene. Based in Lisbon since its inception, the Shostakovich Ensemble is a flexible ensemble and a platform for the meeting and collaboration of exceptional musicians.

The DSCH – Shostakovich Ensemble takes its name from the renowned Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, in tribute to the centenary of his birth in 2006. Since then, the ensemble has performed in numerous seasons and festivals across various European countries, the United States, and Australia.

The extensive repertoire of the DSCH – Shostakovich Ensemble encompasses works from a wide range of periods and musical styles, from Beethoven to Schumann, Mozart to Messiaen, Haydn to Webern, and Brahms to Ravel, including contemporary composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina, with whom the ensemble has developed a close collaboration.

Over its more than 15 years of existence, the Shostakovich Ensemble has featured many of the most significant musicians of our time, including violinists Esther Hoppe, Jack Liebeck, Corey Cerovsek, Liza Ferschtman, Tedi Papavrami, Renaud Capuçon, Benjamin Schmid, and Stephan Picard; violists Lars Anders Tomter, Isabel Charisius, Gérard Caussé, and Miguel da Silva; cellists Adrian Brendel, Christian Poltéra, Gary Hoffman, Kyril Zlotnikov, and Quirine Viersen; double bassists Tiago Pinto-Ribeiro, Matthew McDonald, and Janne Saksala; flutists Emily Beynon, Silvia Careddu, and Adriana Ferreira; oboists Ramón Ortega and Jonathan Kelly; clarinetists Pascal Moragués and Michel Portal; singers José van Dam and Anna Samuil; and pianists Eldar Nebolsin, Rosa Maria Barrantes, and Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro, among others.

In 2018, it established the DSCH – Shostakovich Ensemble Composition Award, intended to honor the works and careers of leading Portuguese composers.
